Abstract

The increase in COVID-19-associated waste (CAW) in the environment might result in their easy approach to other organisms, possibly increasing the potential risk of contaminating the food chain (in ecosystems like freshwater, marine, and terrestrial). Hence, an increase in the quantity of COVID-19-associated waste might lead to a waste disaster when not managed properly. The need of the hour is to create a more efficient, automatic, mechanized, and well-modified waste management system for handling the present situation and delaying the projected waste disaster in the aftermath of COVID 19. The present study incorporates the issues originating to waste discharges, their potential sources, the possible sustainable solutions towards environmental sustainability, and on-site strategies. Proper management of COVID-19 waste is essential for the survival of humankind. It is also kept of equal importance for the environment and animals. The researchers have observed that the the Bio-medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 have not been adequately implemented by the HCFs regarding COVID-19 waste in Bathinda, Punjab.
